Cytological analysis of a peripheral blood smear is an indispensable test in the management of anemia, especially in children. Based on the shape of red blood cells, it is possible to suspect various hereditary or acquired types of anemia, such as thalassemia, spherocytosis, sickle cell anemia, elliptocytosis, and others.
The representation of individual types of white blood cells (differential blood count - DKS) and their appearance are analyzed, and it is assessed whether there are immature blood cells in the peripheral blood smear.
Cytological analysis of peripheral blood is an essential part of diagnostic evaluation and monitoring of hematological diseases (myelodysplasia, leukemia, lymphomas).
In addition, cytological analysis of a peripheral blood smear is extremely useful for diagnosing and monitoring infectious mononucleosis.
Prepare for the test
No preparation is required for a peripheral blood smear analysis, and you do not need to fast before the test.
A small amount of capillary blood is drawn from the fingertip using a lancet. Then, smears are made on microscope slides, which will be analyzed microscopically after drying and staining.
Bring the referral CBC no more than one month old or the same can be done when you come to the laboratory.
Reference values
The cytology doctor writes the differential blood count - DKS and a description of the morphology of all blood cells in the smear on the report. The morphology findings of red blood cells are described, as well as of other blood cells, and at the end of the report it indicates whether immature blood cells were found.
