Nasal smear for eosinophil count

Printer Print test

Due to annual leave, for samples submitted in the week starting 31.8 the results will be completed by 15.9, and for samples submitted in the week from 7.9. the results are ready by 16.9.

Cytological analysis of a swab from both nasal mucosae with an assessment of the presence and number of eosinophilic granulocytes is recommended in case of suspected allergic asthma, if you have prolonged nasal congestion, watery nasal discharge, sneezing, prolonged dry irritating cough, and redness of the nose and eyes.

From each nostril, a swab is gently taken using a wooden stick with cotton, and smears are made on slides which, after drying, are stained and examined under a microscope.

Prepare for the test

If nasal corticosteroid preparations are being used, the recommendation is that they are not administered in the nose at least 4 days before cytological testing due to a possible false negative result. Physiological saline can be used (no effect on the result).
